This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard body horror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
