Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to enact a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
