Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
