Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
