Entire Career of Salary Insufficient for UK Employees to Enter Most Affluent 10%, Report Reveals

Based on fresh research, the typical worker in the UK would need over five decades of salary to reach the wealth level of the most affluent 10% of the population.

Expanding Economic Disparity Through the Years

The analysis examined wealth distribution data from the recent health crisis years and determined that during the mid-2000s, it would have needed 38 years of average worker salary to enter the top 10th of the economic ladder.

An economic expert part of the study stated: "Wealth gaps in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee setting aside their entire income during their working years would still not be able to attain the highest level of the financial hierarchy."

Measuring the Wealth Divide

The analysis found that the difference between the net worth of the median citizen and someone in the richest segment was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had expanded to £1.3 million in inflation-adjusted terms by 2020-22.

The economist continued: "These disparities are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is low – those who commence life well-off tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the financial disparity growing in actual numbers, the percentage of overall assets in the UK owned by the richest households – called "comparative financial divide" – has been "largely unchanged since the eighties," per the analysis.

During this period, total wealth in the UK rose substantially from triple the yearly economic output, to almost 7.5 times.

Factors of Financial Divide

So-called "unearned" appreciation, via increasing property values and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the main drivers of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, per the report.

These gains tended to accrue to elderly homeowners, the analysis reveals – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Age-Based Wealth Disparities

The median economic difference between people in their early 30s and people aged 60-64 more than doubled in real terms, from £135,000 in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.

Regional Variations

There were also significant regional variations, with the median value of wealth in recent years reaching £290k in the southeastern region, where real estate values have typically increased quickly, compared with 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

Pandemic Period Effects

Amid the health crisis, when countless laborers were protected by the public-funded employment protection, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the data shows many households were able to save, enhancing their financial standing.

Wealthier families performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their liquid savings grow by only eighty pounds over the pandemic period (across the pandemic timeframe), approximately equivalent to the two years pre-pandemic. On the other hand, the average household in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves grow by 4,200 pounds," the report finds.
